Remember all the netbook noise back in May? Computex seems months old and in the meantime we have had many distractions in the form of new camcorders, cameras, TVs, iPhones, audio equipment… But the netbooks are coming, and even if there is some delays like in the case of the MSI Wind, the market will [...]

At the same time that Europe and North America are losing their sleep over the release of the 3G iPhone, markets like India require cheap reliable devices to cover an insatiable demand for good old voice communication -remember that?
Nokia has got the message a while ago, and as pluggd India reports, it commands 60% percent [...]

Reading about how scared GPS device manufacturers are about the widespread release of smartphones with that capability integrated, I cannot help but think it is so logical. This functionality is desirable by all of us, so why not have it in the one device that we use all day?
Thinking a bit further, GPS devices are [...]

Apple has a great iPhone strategy. It starts with an attractive product missing critical capabilities -3G fast data rates being the most important one- to then come back with a -surprise surprise- 3G version causing supporters and media to deal with Apple for days on end.
I guess the same people that bought the 2G version [...]

Many times Apple gets it right. This time though the timing was incredibly hopeless. Releasing the Macbook Air just before the torrent of new netbooks floods the market was in my opinion a horrible idea. For more than one reason. Here is five good ones:
Looks: The Macbook air is cute and thin, but so are [...]

The mobile wars have started and June is going to be a hot month with the MSI Wind that will take on the Asus EeePC -the model that has open the doors to cheap very light netbooks. The UMPC and MID segments still look blurry, there is no clear division line for their screen size, [...]

Imagine working like a dog for months and finally finishing your Friday work to board the plane to your much awaited holiday destination. But while having a peaceful flight with your wife and getting a nap is in your best intentions, people around you are speaking ceaselessly on their telephones. To the point that you [...]

SMS messages are a huge money maker for mobile operators. Despite advances in mobile devices and services -see mobile web- they are so deeply ingrained in user minds that use is automatic in more than one case. And there’s no few people that prefer sending their new year or birthday wishes by SMS, although voice [...]

Nokia and famous director Spike Lee signed an agreement for the later to edit user generator cellphone videos and create a mini 3-part series of 5-minute episodes. That’s fine and Nokia does well to contract a big name of modern cinema to promote the video capabilities of its phones.
But stating that in five years’ time [...]

I recently wrote a post about how SSDs are expected to become ubiquitous and cost competitive by 2011. At the end of the post, I mentioned that it is not just a matter of technological development pushing things forward, and that it is also in the interest of laptop manufacturers to sell SSD equipped models [...]

Airlines are already aware of the virtues of 2D barcodes and we will possibly see airline electronic boarding passes in the near future. Google has been quick to foresee the advantages of 2D barcodes, one of them being that a mobile telephone with a camera can read it, and with the right software automatically convert [...]

It was only yesterday that I wrote about what I expected from a good twin SIM mobile telephone and service. Following your consideration of the DuoSIM 228, there is one more option. It comes from Malaysia, costs only $28 and needs a simple addition to your current device…
We are talking about the DuoSIM D2 Dual [...]

Forced to use two mobile devices -one personal, one professional- three years ago I did a little market research on the options I had for a twin SIM telephone. Carrying two devices at the same time is incredibly annoying. Another thing that is also infuriating is the situations when I was speaking on one device [...]

From all countries, Japan seems to be the best prepared to start widely using e-paper. As Reuters reports, Japanese companies are already very active in e-paper R&D, while the first colour versions have started to appear. We are talking about thin sheets of fabric that accept electronic signals and can be bent or even folded [...]

So far, we have been talking about Intel vs AMD. But maybe it is time to call this battle outmoded as Intel is joining the mobile device arena. And who is it going to meet there? Qualcomm of course!
Unlike other succesful corporations, Qualcomm has kept a lower profile and has since 1985 worked systematically to [...]
