Chrome OS looks too low powered and low featured
Chrome OS is a hotly anticipated product by Google, many believe it is a Windows killer. Today’s initial presentations gave me the impression of a glorified browser which is all that runs on a certain piece of hardware. I fact, Chrome OS could hardly be classified as a computer OS…
There is hardly any accessory support, there is SSD support without classical hard disc support, and storage of everything in the cloud. Google believes that people prefer to just use the Internet and not store anything locally. This might be true in some cases, but then again that is what I can do with a decent smartphone without carrying around a larger device. The startup time is 7 seconds but again a smartphone is always on! So this argument is completely irrelevant for light applications. And what if I want a custom look for my machine? Nothing has been mentioned.
Some years ago Microsoft went to the court for bundling Internet Explorer in its OS. So now that the Chrome OS throws in your face Google, Google and yet again Google, is this not more of the same thing? I mean there is a real fear that not only our searches but also all of our documents will have to pass through Google… Is that in order? Is that acceptable?
My first impression is that Chrome OS is trying to occupy the shaky ground between smartphones and netbooks, in other words no man’s land… I am much more happy using a higher end netbook or lower end laptop plus a smartphone instead of a netbook/laptop plus smartphone plus a Chrome OS device. Chrome OS is of course not out yet and when it will be released it will be sold loaded on approved devices. Does it sound a lot like Apple?
