Micro 4/3 format announced by Olympus & Panasonic

The Four Thirds system pioneered by Olympus is the only digital DSLR format built from the ground up for digital sensors. Although it has had some impact in the DSLR segment and created its own dedicated followers, it has not managed to upset the Canon and Nikon competition. However, it is a system that holds a lot of promise and quietly grows with new bodies and new lens. The later now fulfil any whim and need, making the 4/3 universe completely self sustained.

The announcement of the Micro Four Thirds system by Olympus and Panasonic is a major event. Basically, it is a system with the same Four Thirds 18×13.5mm sensor but without the mirror and its accompanying mechanism. The result? An extremely compact body, accompanied by similarly compact lens, making the compact DSLR a dream come true! It is the most exciting announcement for digital photography for a long long time!

4/3 lens will be used with the Micro 4/3 bodies via a special adaptor, sacrificing small size but achieving a first for compatibility between bodies of such differing sizes. The bad news is that the through-the-lens view is gone in favour of either live view or a compact-type viewfinder, a necessary sacrifice for a small sized body.

Of course the 4/3 and Micro 4/3 ranges will continue in parallel, further development will now continue with both product lines in mind. We have to wait for the first products, Photokina is almost certainly the venue where important announcements will take place. I have to express my satisfaction for the new 4/3 developments, Olympus is not exactly struggling, but its 4/3 system has remained a second tier product after the Canon and Nikon lineups. But times have changed and full-frame sensors are no more a guarantee for superior images. Hopefully, with the support of heavyweight Panasonic, Olympus’ effort will manage to find its way to further success.
