Hasselblad H3II-50 will have 50Mp resolution

Following its top of the range H3II-39, Hasselblad goes one step even further with its H3II-50 and its 50Mp resolution. The new medium format model is the result of collaboration on the sensor front with Kodak. Apparently, there will also be a 50Mp sensor for the 645 format.

I don’t even want to think of the price of this thing, but this is not the point. Cramming so many pixels in a 48×36mm sensor is quite an achievement that very few people will find uses for. Apart from the cost factor, such a camera is useless for anything but effectively studio use, even then smaller resolutions are more than enough for almost all cases.

Do you see where I am going? I mean if the next Hasselblad model had 70Mp would you be excited? I would be excited the same amount I am excited when a compact goes from 10 to 12Mp. But here the non excitement is amplified by the astronomic difference it will cost for the extra megapixels.

Digital photography is running out of features and the resolutions are already too high to justify going even higher, unless you want to shoot the whole universe in one go. Just remember, next time you see a long queue on the street it is for the 3G iPhone and not for a digital camera…
