A first by Nikon: Upgrade of D3 DSLR buffer!
Nikon does not seize to amaze these days. The D700 (unboxing here) is the full-frame body we all need, while the D3 occupies the peak of the range, for many the best DSLR that exists at the moment. Now Nikon comes to surprise us with an internal upgrade that nobody had thought of or tried before!
We are talking about the doubling of the D3’s buffer, increasing capacity from 16 to 36 NEF 14-bit lossless files -Nikon’s version of RAW. Is it something every D3 user needs? Surely not, but it is a significant upgrade, especially for sports photographers, topping the 20 frame buffer of the Canon 1Ds MkIII.
It is not a cheap upgrade, it will put you back by $500 and requires the body to be sent to Nikon for the necessary work. For that amount one can now get an entry DSLR or contribute towards some nice glass, so it is not a light decision…
I am just thinking, are we finally looking at the possibility of a modular DSLR? Wouldn’t it be great to be able to choose the features of our camera according to our needs? It would probably make DSLR specs very complicated and if it ever happened I think it would be limited to professional models where buyers know more about their exact needs…
