Michael Dell interview by Om Malik

GigaOM has a very interesting interview of Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell. The questions are quite direct and Michael Dell is not hiding behind his finger. He makes it very clear that desktops, laptops and notebooks remain the core of Dell’s business.

On cloud computing, Dell is participating in the infrastructure but it seems that seeing a complete solution from them is not an urgent priority. Similarly for smartphones, where the OS of choice is craftily not revealed, but who knows, we might be in for a surprise with a customer choice of OS. There is no word -at least in the GigaOM interview excerpts- on UMPCs or MIDs, clearly Dell is convinced that its upcoming netbook is the right choice, at least for now…

The high points of the interview? Firstly, the fact that Dell is turning things around and still keeps its supply chain costs low enough to be an advantage over the competition. Secondly and most importantly, Michael Dell is having an open mind and what has worked well so far is questioned and compared to alternatives. For example, Dell in Greece has so far only been active in business computing, but now starts retail sales via a local chain. This might well be a good strategy in other countries as well, increasing brand awareness and penetration.
