If all deliveries were like that…

A few days back I lost my Canon 400D eyepiece -after cleaning it and absent mindedly forgetting it somewhere :-( Finding no help in the wonderful Greek retailers that only want to get boxes out the door without bothering for client support after that, my only choice was Intersys, the importer of Canon in Greece.

When I called them, they first told me to look for an eyepiece at the retailers, but after being told that I already did that and had no hope, they then tried to get me to contact their Thessaloniki branch -why I have no idea, both Athens and Thessaloniki are equally far from where I live and I would have to pay for an extra phone call, but I suppose they would have one thing less to do- I convinced them to send me what I wanted after explaining the difficulties I had.

To cut the long story short, Intersys was very kind to quickly mail me what I needed but what I received was what you see in the photo above (minus the humongous padding of course). What I paid? €6 for the eyepiece and €20 for the postal service. To be honest courier services are damn expensive so even with the right volume of packaging I would still pay €15 or something of that order anyway. However the volume devoted to a tiny product that is not shock prone is plain stupid. The box you see could easily take 100 eyepieces without problem. If all products in the delivery were packaged the same way it would have been a pretty light load! Let’s see some equivalents:

  • A single fridge carried by a 35 tonne truck.
  • A single vehicle flown by a Galaxy transport plane.

Am I exaggerating? Not at all, and I am afraid that the parallelisms are complete insane but at the same time completely right. It is just that the order of magnitude changes and we take more notice… So is that how companies are environmentally friendly? Would Canon be happy after all those years of endangered species advertising? I don’t think so… Now let’s make sure that our TVs are not waiting in stand-by but are properly switched off because it is good for the environment…
