Canon EOS 1000D/Rebel XS review by dpreview

The Canon 1000D has been rumoured, announced and released in record time. In previews years, when Canon was the undisputed leader of all DSLR categories, we would have to be grilled all summer till the Photokina official announcement. This time around, the Olympus E-420, the Nikon D60 and the Sony A200 have created a new entry category below the Canon 450D, thus necessitating Canon’s introduction of the 1000D as its new entry category challenger.

Dpreview as usual has a detailed review and it is no surprise that for the kit price of €650 the 1000D costs, it is a quality product that essentially produces great images. High ISO performance is very good, picture styles work fine and in general DSLR starters have a no-brainer choice. The small grip and 7-point focus can always be points of complaint, but hey, we are talking about an entry DSLR here.

The more one looks at the 1000D, the more it looks like a 400D with a slightly inferior focus system and the addition of live-view, which is essentially what it is. I mean since the base for this product already existed it was a matter of Canon changing the mixture a little bit to come up with a new product. Having already written about Canon not needing a DSLR cheaper than the 450D, I have to backtrack a little and say that market realities now make this impossible, even if the 1000D has nothing new to offer in any way. The price of the 1000D is certainly going to go lower with time, however if you are looking for an entry DSLR and are willing to pay a little bit more there is nothing stopping you from going a category up for a 450D or equivalent.
