JVC Everio line adopts AVCHD in parallel with MPEG-2

In an interesting twist, JVC decides to combine the best of both MPEG-2 -used in Everio models so far- and AVCHD. To fight AVCHD-only models from competitors Sony and Canon, later this summer the Everio line is going to be enriched with three new models, the GZ-HD40, the GZ-HD30 and the GZ-HD10. The first two give you the choice of easy editing via the easier MPEG-2 algorithm, while AVCHD provides lower bitrates, more suitable if you want to save space on your storage media.
Other important features are the first ever use of CMOS sensors in the Everio range, plus the inclusion of a Firewire port. The main features per model are:
- GZ-HD40: 120GB hard disc, AVCHD/MPEG-2 format, 1920×1080 full HD, 17Mbps (AVCHD)/27Mbps (MPEG-2), 10-15 hours of storage depending on chosen quality, $1,299,95.
- GZ-HD30: 80GB hard disc, AVCHD/MPEG-2 format, 1920×1080 full HD, 17Mbps (AVCHD)/27Mbps (MPEG-2), 6-33 hours of storage depending on chosen quality, $999,95.
- GZ-HD10: 40GB hard disc, AVCHD format, 1440×1080 full HD, 17Mbps (AVCHD), 1-3.3 hours of storage depending on chosen quality, $799,95.
Obviously GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30 are the models of choice for their native resolution and choice of format. They will be ideal platforms for a direct comparison of MPEG-2 and AVCHD.
