Nokia doing some handy business in India

At the same time that Europe and North America are losing their sleep over the release of the 3G iPhone, markets like India require cheap reliable devices to cover an insatiable demand for good old voice communication -remember that?

Nokia has got the message a while ago, and as pluggd India reports, it commands 60% percent of the market with distribution deals that covers more than 90% of mobile telephone outlets! Of course it is right to say that no single company can realistically hope to keep commanding such a huge percentage of the market for ever, but an early entrance strategy builds much wanted customer awareness, extremely useful for the longer run.

Second place is held by Sony-Ericsson (8%) while Samsung in third place (7%) has just overtaken Motorola and is taking a more aggressive stance. The cheaper Nokia models have the brilliant Nokia OS that made them the world’s favourites in previous years before the arrival of smartphones. Because of the vast growth potential of the Indian market and the difficulties there with landline connections Nokia is posed for a significant push of its turnover and profits in the coming years.
