Canon 1000D/Rebel XS predictable details officially announced

The announced characteristics of the new Canon 1000D/Rebel XS are as predictable as we previously talked about:

  • 10 megapixel CMOS chip.
  • Liveview.
  • 450D-like menus.
  • Digic III processor.
  • 7-point auto-focus.
  • 3 fps continuous rate.
  • 2.5 inch LCD.
  • Will be sold with an image-stabilised 18-55mm kit lens.

Sales will start in Japan and will later spill to all other markets. Exact pricing is still awaited, expect it to be at the levels of the cheapest bodies in the market today.

Technically the 1000D is a step back to 400D days and all characteristics are a careful step down from those of the 450D. I have expressed my opinion that such a body is hardly needed in the market today, however it is market realities that force Canon to get a model in the very low price DSLR category. Let’s hope that DSLR manufacturers will become more daring and that Canon will start to innovate again. Competing in price is hardly exciting news…
