NVIDIA might be the great upsetter in MID devices [videos]

The mobile wars have started and June is going to be a hot month with the MSI Wind that will take on the Asus EeePC -the model that has open the doors to cheap very light netbooks. The UMPC and MID segments still look blurry, there is no clear division line for their screen size, capabilities, processing class and power.

Nevertheless, chip manufacturers rush to get in the new market with Intel (Atom), AMD (Puma), VIA (Nano), Qualcomm and NVIDIA (Tegra) all now having mobile families ready for the big showdown. It all reminds me of the good old days when desktop PC growth was phenomenal and there were propositions flying from all directions before Wintel finally squashed all competition.

NVIDIA is going to great lengths to capitalise on its Tegra line’s small integrated size, low power consumption -stated to be 1/10 that of Intel Atom systems- and 3D plus HD prowess. Aiming for MID class devices in principle gives NVIDIA some breathing space from Intel, AMD and VIA which have larger, heavier and more power hungry systems, but is probably leading to head-on collision course with Qualcomm which has matching power and size aspirations.

2008 is going to be a landmark year because mobile computing is gaining great momentum with new software and hardware. NVIDIA’s approach is powerful and an effort to convincingly reproduce on a small device video and 3D gaming. To get a flavour of how NVIDIA is imagining the future of light mobile computing, watch the videos that follow after the break.
