New Olympus E-520 DSLR, Zuiko ED 9-18mm lens
In the same fashion that the Olympus E-420 replaced the E-410, now comes the E-520 to replace the E-510. As expected, improvements are incremental and overall the E-520 is a better product with better developed features and additions:
-
Better dynamic range, a point where the E-510 had attracted some criticism.
-
Larger 2.7 inch LCD.
-
Face detection, a feature to please users coming from compact cameras.
-
Wireless flash, from the larger E-3.
-
Shadow Adjustment Technology, from the larger E-3.
-
Re-coloured buttons, as in the E-420.
The remaining characteristics are mainly carried over or improved from the E-510:
-
10 megapixel sensor.
-
Sensor shifting image stabilisation.
-
Ultrasonic dust protection.
-
Live view.
-
3.5fps with 8 image RAW buffer.
-
ISO 100-1600.
-
USB 2.0 connectivity.
Expect the price to be at E-510 levels, sales start in June. Overall, the E-520 is expected to be a better rounded version of the E-510 with enhanced performance and image results.
The Zuiko ED 9-18mm is a wide angle lens that is well suited to prosumer users of the new Olympus E-420 and E-520 bodies. The 18-36mm range (35mm equivalent) is great for landscapes, especially when combined with a low 280g of weight. However, the aperture of f/4.0-5.6 could be better, given that we talk about a wide angle model.
Availability starts in September, price is yet to be announced and expected to be reasonable for the lens category.
