InPhase holographic storage arrives in May
Holographic storage is a promising storage technology that has been demonstrated in NAB 2008 and is finally commercialised by InPhase this May. By storing data in effectively three dimensions of the storage media -conventional optical discs store data in planes- it achieves very high capacities, in line with ever larger hard discs and the exploding use of video.
The InPhase 300r is a brick shaped drive that takes cartridge protected 12cm diameter discs -same diameter as CDs or DVDs. Capacity will initially be 300GB, read/write data rates will reach 20MB/sec and disc life is projected to 50 years. Of course the later figure is questionable and judging by older optical disc estimates it would be nice to have some extra information and verification.
The good news is that disc capacity will eventually increase to 1.6TB and data rates will reach 120MB/sec. The bad news is that the deck will cost $18,000 and each 300GB disc $180. Therefore not much need to search online for those unboxing and first impressions videos…
