Red announces 5K Red Epic, 3K Scarlet, Ray Drive (NAB Show 2008)
Red has made major announcements in NAB 2008, with three much awaited products that attracted much hype in the run-up to the show.
The Red Epic is a 5K HD camera that of course replaces the Red One as the company’s new flagship and has the following main features:
- Full-frame S35mm Mysterium X sensor.
- Shooting at up to 100 fps.
- Dual-link HD SDI.
- HDMI, USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 connectivity.
- WiFi control.
- 2-XLR audio inputs.
- About 3kg of aluminium body.
- Compatible with most Red One accessories.
According to Gizmodo, if you have already purchased a Red One at $17,500, you get full credit towards a Red Epic when it becomes available in 2009.
The Red Scarlet creates a third resolution step in the Red lineup with a 3K sensor. Of course this makes things a bit complicated, since every one of Red’s bodies will have a different resolution -3K, 4K and 5K. The main features are:
- Maximum frame of 120fps.
- Redcode RAW and RGB recording to dual Compactflash cards at 100MB/sec.
- 4.8 inch LCD.
- 8X T2.8 Red zoom lens.
- HDMI, HD-SDI, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectivity.
- WiFi control.
Price is rumoured to be under $3,000…
The Red Ray drive will play 4K, 2K, 1080p, 720p and SD material from Red Disc and Red Express, plus native RAW R3D files from Compactflash cards. As Gizmodo has correctly stated, it is strange that 5K and 3K resolutions are not supported.

As the company site states “specifications, delivery dates and design are subject to change… count on it”…
Red has decided to change the camcorder world as we know it and this NAB show makes this even more evident…
