Minolta 58/f1.2 converted with ROM Chip to AF for Sony A700

Some people are plain creative and come up with stuff and conversions that would more likely be expected from factory engineers. As Engadget reports, the moderator of the Dyxum photographic forum has managed to convert an old 58 mm/f1.2 Minolta lens from the 60s to AF for a brand new Sony A700!
The forum post describes the process which involves both mechanical and electronic intervention. A custom ROM chip was added and the mount was reworked, both to ensure compatibility with the A700’s characteristics.
And does it work? The photos published in the same forum are testament that all goes fine. And apparently there is plans for more lens conversions. When the Minolta 5D and 7D DSLRs were launched -before the whole division was bought by Sony- if I remember well compatibility with all previous Minolta lens was ensured, but with retainement of manual focus for the older lens. This gave Minolta the advantage of having instant availability of a large lens range, an indispendable ingredient in a DSLR line. As we move deaper into Sony design with new models and features, sadly this compatibility will be slowly lost. If you have lots of old Minolta lens better stick with your 5D or 7D body.
