5 reasons we need mobile websites

In a recent post I have listed five reasons light mobile versions of websites are necessary for current and near future mobile devices. Of course hardware and software change so rapidly that I am going to play it safe and state that everything is possible. For this reason, here is five reasons that for our mobile devices we need light versions of classic websites:

  1. Web becomes universal tool: things might be moving slowly in some countries, but sooner or later web pages -PC or mobile- will be the prevalent way to undertake our banking, pay for our cinema tickets and parking, etc. For many of those tasks, light page versions are more than enough.
  2. Screens: we all love mobile devices. Even with the new generations of MIDs and UMPCs, chances are we will still like to have smartphones that we can easily carry around. Since small screens are so tiresome and need so much scrolling with full web pages, chances are that light mobile pages will be necessary till the screen estate problem is worked out.
  3. Complexity: light pages mean quick responses, higher speed and lower energy consumption. Especially the later is crucial if we do not like to carry chargers with us most of the time. Furthermore, even the simplest mobile CPU will be able to handle web tasks with ease.
  4. Wide use: simple pages have higher penetration with non-PC users. Especially in countries that only have or will build a wireless infrastructure as the only choice for voice and data, simplicity will be the name of the game.
  5. Easier web page design: simple mobile web pages are a breeze to design and no special skills will be required. This way the weight of operation will fall on the more important part of communication and social networking.

Confused? No need to be. By next year we will have a much clearer idea of what kind of web we will access from our mobile devices. It is even highly possible that the two complexity levels will coexist, no matter how cumbersome it will be to have two web worlds in parallel. Till then, let’s sincerely hope that hardware, software and attractive data plans arrive as soon as possible.
