Sony HDR-SR12 and HDR-SR11 “are great camcorders” - Review by CamcorderInfo

So far 2008 is a good year for HD camcorders. The Canon HF10 was the first to break the deadlock and offer great performance for the AVCHD standard. Now Sony seems to join the top end of consumer HD camcorders with its new HDR-SR12 and HDR-SR11 models. The only difference between the two is the storage size, with HDR-SR12 offering 120 GB of hard-disc space and HDR-SR11 exactly half of that.
CamcorderInfo has an extensive review and it seems that Sony’s third generation AVCHD machine is achieving the format’s potential with great bright light performance and sharpness The added bonus is good low light performance with relatively low noise that betters Canon’s HF10. Furthermore, it is better that the new JVC’s GZ-HD6, it seems that MPEG-2 now has some formidable competition. Like all electronics, there is features that one can love or hate. For example the 3.2 inch Sony touchscreen is not to everybody’s liking, and the 60i framerate might be limiting for those that use 30p and 24p.
At $1,399 the HDR-SR12 is not cheap and if you settle for the 60 GB storage the equally capable HDR-SR11 is $200 cheaper. At $1,099, the Canon HF10 seems like a damn good deal, however it all comes down to your taste for each model’s handling, storage type and choices for framerate and manual control. If flash memory is your preference, do not look any further. Either way, as a user you are in for great performance.
