NVIDIA responsible for almost one third of Vista crashes!

Source: ars technica

Poor Microsoft. You have been hammered by almost everyone about the instability of Windows Vista. But what can you do when the largest GPU supplier writes low quality driver software that causes the whole OS to crash?

NVIDIA’s G80 architecture caused many problems throughout 2007 and the pie chart above -based on Microsoft data- confirms that NVIDIA drivers were the major cause of crashes. Not that others are as good as we would expect, with heavies like Intel and ATI causing their big share of the problems. So here is what I make of all this mess:

  • Microsoft has got into the worst bump ride of its history, largely because of flawed code that it has to an extent never written. It is impossible to know what course of action was taken as problems were detected and how fast they were resolved. What matters is that XP is still king and only this year and after Vista SP1 will we start seeing a change.
  • The PC is complicated and with all the millions of lines of code in a single machine something can go wrong very easily. That’s why Apple does not release control…
  • The above pie chart apparently reveals that magazines and sites many times do not have a clue as to the real reasons something is going wrong. For one year now I have only heard accusations of Microsoft’s software but never anything about NVIDIA or Intel…
  • The frequency of GPU driver updates is so frequent that it is impossible -or impractical- for a person trying to lead a normal life to check and implement them as required. Did I hear any complaints about Microsoft’s automatic updates?

All the above is confirmation that the larger a company is, the more criticism it attracts. This is not to say that NVIDIA, Intel and ATI are exactly the new young kids on the block…
