Canon HF10 “the first great AVCHD camcorder”

There is hardly any camcorder that is not tested by the guys at camcorderinfo. Amid the storage medium confusion -HD, tape, flash, optical disc- there is also the even more serious matter of what format to choose. From the first HD generation, the only models that managed to offer good quality results were tape based HDV models, working and storing footage much like their miniDV ancestors.
The new Canon HF10 is however a different animal. Despite being a AVCHD camcorder, it is not plagued by the problems of older efforts. The comparison with the established Canon HV20 -a HDV camcorder- showed that in most instances the two models were comparable with very few frames making things for AVCHD difficult.
The HF10 has 16 GB of internal memory which can be augmented by SDHC cards. It is also small, light and goes beyond the demands of the lower end. So is it time to go out and buy one? The move to HD is unavoidable and with prices going down all the time, there will very soon be no room left for SD camcorders, even if you want one. What is encouraging is that qualitative results improve rapidly. However, do not expect very soon the standardisation and ease of editing achieved by miniDV.
Current storage and editing solutions cannot cope with lossless HD recording, but like it or not this is the ultimate aim. So here is a problem for you to solve Canon, Sony, Panasonic and JVC!
