IMAX Theaters go digital

I remember my first IMAX experience in Munich, Germany in 1995. Man it was awesome, huge screen and a sound system to die for… Thankfully, the magic is not going to disappear in analogue oblivion, as there is now concrete plans to move the IMAX experience to a 100% digital domain.

IMAX is closely working on the transition with TI and from the summer of 2008 all new IMAX theaters will be equipped with digital DLP 3D projection. No more cumbersome reels and complicated projection equipment. DLP has been chosen among other digital projection technologies and apart from the qualitative benefits and result repeatability, another great advantage will be the much needed flexibility to be gained with digital content.

3D projection is an emerging saviour of cinemas worldwide and judging by IMAX’s success so far, its move to digital is yet another vital step for the survival of cinema theaters in the years ahead.
