Microsoft’s Silverlight coming to Nokia smartphones

Silverlight is Microsoft’s competitor to Adobe’s firmly entrenched Flash player. It currently runs on Windows and Mac OS X, but as mobile devices become a new major battleground, Nokia is the best door to knock on as it currently commands 40% of the world market.
According to Crave, the two companies are expected to announce a partnership. Silverlight will be rewritten for Symbian and will be compatible to versions S60 and S40. A Linux version is to follow soon and make happy those of us that need a Nokia N810 for our web surfing needs.
Microsoft is pushing Silverlight quite aggressively, striking deals and talking to different manufacturers. ElectronRun has already covered SkyFire and its PC-like advantages. The way things develop, smartphones will boast a long list of applications that can be installed and used, possibly a detriment to simplicity of use. The fact of course that rich media is tackled in such a serious manner means only one thing, mobile phones will lose their current voice-only role and become truly connected devices for a wide range of professional and entertainment tasks.
