New Nikon D60 DSLR coming to PMA 2008

In the build up to PMA 2008 we already know of the new DSLR cameras from Canon, Pentax and Samsung, for which you can read here. Of course Nikon could not be left behind and chose its official announcement time to be much closer to the PMA opening day this Thursday. The D60 is the new baby and it looks incredibly close to the older D40x that it will probably replace. It incorporates the following features:

  • 10 megapixel sensor.
  • A dust protection system that combines self-cleaning sensor shake-off and an airflow design to sweep dust away.
  • 3-area autofocus.
  • Instant power-up.
  • Sensitivity up to ISO 1600.
  • Small compact body.
  • SD/SDHC flash memory.
  • 2.5 inch screen that has a nice auto-rotating feature depending on how the camera is held and auto switch-off when the viewfinder is used.
  • EXCEED image-processing. As all entry DSLRs there are some readily available functions to achieve different effects. A clever new function is the automatic creation of a stop-motion animation from an image sequence.

Like Canon’s 450D, the D60 is the entry consumer model that will lure new customers to Nikon’s DSLR system and is intended and expected to sell in high volumes. Nikon has the taken the proven evolutionary road of few surprises and strong value for the enthusiast that does not want to spend a fortune. Thus, the attractive price of €699 -or about $750-that includes the stabilised AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens.
